2.5 h. walking tour (Private tour)
(guidance throughout + visit of the archeological museum + visit of the aqueduct + free time)
As you get off your cruise ship you will be met by your officially licensed tour guide and your private walking tour will start. During this tour your guide will present you with all of the long and complicated history of this city and of Northern Greece, pointing out along the way the historical buildings and squares of the city. Most of the walking tour will be around the lower part of the city without much hiking involved, but you will see in the distance the city's Byzantine castle, as well as the tall modern apartment buildings.
Among the places you will visit will be the Archaeological Museum, the two-story aqueduct (Kamares) which was built by the Turks in the 16th century and supplied the castle with water, the remaining walls of the old town, Imaret which is a monument of Islamic architecture built by Mehmet Ali, the founder of the Egyptian empire, the house where Mehmet Ali was born, and more. At the old port you will have the chance to take photos of the many wooden boats there, used daily to bring out of the sea hundreds of kilos of fresh fish. Right next to them you will find some of the most famous fish tavernas in Greece and at the end of your tour you will be able to go there and enjoy a snack and local specialties, accompanied by a glass of ouzo. Your guide can give you suggestions before the end of the tour on how to get back to the ship or where to go and enjoy your lunch, relax at a cafe or visit the local market to buy some local products, before returning back to your ship.
